Mother of Our Redeemer
Stephen Gauthier and Eirik Olsen

From the manger at Bethlehem to the foot of the cross, Mary of Nazareth is a unique witness to the saving life and death of her Divine Son.  Likewise, the Scriptures signal her presence with the apostles at the very core of Christ's mystical body, the Church, on the Day of Pentecost.  But  just what do we really know about Mary?  How has the Church viewed her through the ages?  What is her place today for Christians who seek to follow faithfully in the Great Tradition?  In this class, we will explore what we can learn today from the one whose humble "yes" to God remains the model of true discipleship and whom the Eastern Church delights to describe as "the one who point to Christ."

Dr. Gauthier has his Ph.D. in French from Vanderbult University. He has done extensive work in Carmelite Studies and liturgical practices of the church throughout history.  He frequently leads liturgy retreats as an opportunity for people to worship.

Father Olsen is a businessman, and a priest at the Church of the Resurrection.

Training in Godliness
W. Jay Wood

We can’t love God with all our hearts, mind, soul and strength, and love our neighbors as ourselves unless our hearts, minds and body are up to the task.  While we don’t play the whole role, we play an indispensable role in training body, mind and heart to true godliness.  This six-week class will explore the contours of this training regimen by looking at the component parts of a Christian Character and seeing how they must coordinate in the mature Christian personality.

Dr. Wood is professor of philosophy at Wheaton College, having earned his  Ph.D. from Notre Dame University.  He is the author of Epistomology: Becoming Intellectually Virtuous (InterVarsity), and is co-author of a forthcoming book from Oxford on the intellectual virtues. He has been worshipping in the Anglican tradition for over 20 years.

Making Sense of the Old Testament
Manya Gyuro

Between arcane laws, political conflict, strange poetry, and jarring prophecy, the Old Testament can be intimidating to read. In this class, we look at six concepts to help anyone be a better reader of the Old Testament and focus on key passages to illustrate and practice using these concepts. Ultimately, our goal is to know God better and to celebrate what he has done in the past and his presence with us in the community of faith.

Dr. Gyuro is an Adjunct Professor
of Old Testament at Wheaton College.
She has her Ph.D in Bible and Ancient
Near Eastern Studies from Hebrew
Union College.

Drinking from the Spring of Elijah: Five Paths to a Deeper Prayer Life.
Stephen and Barbara Gauthier

Learn from five great Pray-ers of the Christian Tradition how to enter into prayer that fosters a deeper and more intimate relationship with Christ.  Teresa of Avila likens prayer to an interior castle where His Majesty lives enthroned at the very center of her heart.  John of the Cross tells how the Dark Night of the Soul empties us of the world and allows us to draw closer to Jesus, the Bridegroom who is seeking us as his Beloved. Brother Lawrence shares his secret for living continually in the presence of God in the midst of a hectic daily schedule.  Therese of Lisieux lays out her "little way" of childlike trust in Jesus that is available to all.  For Elizabeth of the Trinity, it is the praise of God's glory that leads her straight into the heart of the Trinity.

Discovering the Sacramental Life

There are many ways to live the Christian faith, each one distinctive-Baptist, Catholic, evangelical, Orthodox, Pentecostal, and so on. The Anglican tradition offers another way still. While it has much in common with other streams, it is characterized by what is called a  sacramental way of living. This means more than having a higher theology of baptism and the Eucharist. It also makes a difference in how one thinks, prays, serves, studies, and loves. This class explores the shape of this sacramental life. It examines our liturgy (including the sacraments), the Book of  Common Prayer, some Anglican history and theology, sacramental spirituality, and the meaning of confirmation.
